April is Arts Month in Dearborn!

Art, music, theater – Dearborn has it all!

Arts Dearborn, a month-long celebration, will shine a spotlight on the community’s rich cultural landscape and encourage all to “look, listen, learn.”

"Look" at the April calendar of events that will let you know when you can “look” at art exhibits and demonstrations across the city all month long. Arts Dearborn begins with an exciting “Gallery Rally” during the first week of April, encouraging visitors to “look” at exhibits at the nine art gallery locations across the city. Art galleries include the Padzieski Gallery (Ford Community & Performing Arts Center); Arab American National Museum* (AANM); Artspace; Green Brain Comics, Rotunda Gallery (Centennial Library), Sisson Gallery (Henry Ford College); Berkowitz Gallery (University of Michigan-Dearborn), the Glass Academy, and Art for the Spirit (Beaumont Oakwood). Installations include work from local, regional and national artists and noteworthy collections. Admission is free at each site. (*AANM admission ticket required.)

“Look" at a captivating “Walk Around” photo exhibit representing the many faces of Dearborn on display in the windows of several area businesses. Photos were taken by local photographers and students participating in the SURA Arts program at the Arab American National Museum.

“Listen” to the award-winning Dearborn Symphony at its April 7 “Cartoons and Comics” POPS concert featuring favorites from classic cartoons, movie scores, video games with added surprises. Tickets for the 8 p.m. performance are available at the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center Box Office.

“Look, listen and learn” more about the arts and their impact on Dearborn students at the annual Youth Arts Festival on April 19 at the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center. Hundreds of students will participate in the city-wide art exhibit that opens at 4 p.m. and collage concert at 7 p.m., offering a fast-paced variety show of vocal, instrumental and theater performances. All are welcome, admission is free.

The annual Mayor’s Arts Awards on April 26 at 7 p.m. provides an opportunity to learn more about and celebrate individuals and businesses that promote and support the arts. Admission is free to attend this event at the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center.

A number of local businesses are promoting art in Dearborn by hosting artists in their establishments during April.  The Business in the Arts-Artists in Action program provides an opportunity to observe and interact with artists working in a variety of mediums including oil and watercolor painting, performing music, and rug hooking.

Arts Dearborn is coordinated by the Dearborn Community Fund in cooperation with community cultural organization members of the Dearborn Recreation Commission Cultural Arts Committee.  Committee organizations include the Arab American National Museum; Dearborn Community Arts Council, Dearborn Community Fund, Dearborn Public Schools (Art & Music); Dearborn Recreation Commission; Dearborn Symphony Orchestra, Dearborn Youth Symphony; Friends of the Dearborn Symphony; Motor City Brass Band; and Players Guild of Dearborn.

Big Read Dearborn Art Competition Call for Entries

The Dearborn Public Library presents the “Do You Know Poe?” art competition in conjunction with The Big Read, a program of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) in partnership with Arts Midwest. The book selected for The Big Read Dearborn, a community-wide reading initiative, is “Great Tales and Poems of Edgar Allen Poe.” Art entries should reflect the theme of The Big Read Dearborn: “Dreaming Dreams No Mortal Ever Dared Dream Before.”

Artists must be 16 years of age or older, and can submit up to two works for consideration. Entry fees  are $25 per submission, or two for $30. Reduced entry fee for students and Artists' Society of Dearborn members.

The show will be held in the Rotunda Gallery of the Henry Ford Centennial Library, 16301 Michigan Ave. in Dearborn, from Feb. 6-25.

Gallery Brings Out Dearborn’s “Highlights” In June

The Dearborn Community Arts Council is presenting an exhibition featuring the best of the Artists’ Society of Dearborn and the district wide Dearborn Public Schools Art Show through June 26 at the Padzieski Gallery, located inside of the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center, 15801 Michgian Ave.

The opening reception for “Highlights: Artists’ Society of Dearborn & Dearborn Public Schools” is Wednesday, June 3 from 6-8 p.m. All are welcome to attend the opening which features local artists, local students and a variety of snacks and refreshments.

This exhibit offers a showcase for the diverse talents of our community including outstanding student artwork done in 2D and 3D formats, as well as award winning examples of the ASD’s recent “group challenges” which present the themes of “Trains” and “Spring” in a variety of media.

In their regular program “Teatime with the Artists”, The Padzieski Gallery will present the ASD’s John Angus and Dave Gorden from 2-3 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17 for a free, informal art talk with refreshments.
