April is Arts Month in Dearborn!

Art, music, theater – Dearborn has it all!

Arts Dearborn, a month-long celebration, will shine a spotlight on the community’s rich cultural landscape and encourage all to “look, listen, learn.”

"Look" at the April calendar of events that will let you know when you can “look” at art exhibits and demonstrations across the city all month long. Arts Dearborn begins with an exciting “Gallery Rally” during the first week of April, encouraging visitors to “look” at exhibits at the nine art gallery locations across the city. Art galleries include the Padzieski Gallery (Ford Community & Performing Arts Center); Arab American National Museum* (AANM); Artspace; Green Brain Comics, Rotunda Gallery (Centennial Library), Sisson Gallery (Henry Ford College); Berkowitz Gallery (University of Michigan-Dearborn), the Glass Academy, and Art for the Spirit (Beaumont Oakwood). Installations include work from local, regional and national artists and noteworthy collections. Admission is free at each site. (*AANM admission ticket required.)

“Look" at a captivating “Walk Around” photo exhibit representing the many faces of Dearborn on display in the windows of several area businesses. Photos were taken by local photographers and students participating in the SURA Arts program at the Arab American National Museum.

“Listen” to the award-winning Dearborn Symphony at its April 7 “Cartoons and Comics” POPS concert featuring favorites from classic cartoons, movie scores, video games with added surprises. Tickets for the 8 p.m. performance are available at the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center Box Office.

“Look, listen and learn” more about the arts and their impact on Dearborn students at the annual Youth Arts Festival on April 19 at the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center. Hundreds of students will participate in the city-wide art exhibit that opens at 4 p.m. and collage concert at 7 p.m., offering a fast-paced variety show of vocal, instrumental and theater performances. All are welcome, admission is free.

The annual Mayor’s Arts Awards on April 26 at 7 p.m. provides an opportunity to learn more about and celebrate individuals and businesses that promote and support the arts. Admission is free to attend this event at the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center.

A number of local businesses are promoting art in Dearborn by hosting artists in their establishments during April.  The Business in the Arts-Artists in Action program provides an opportunity to observe and interact with artists working in a variety of mediums including oil and watercolor painting, performing music, and rug hooking.

Printed copies of the calendar area available at Dearborn Public Library locations, the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center, participating art galleries and a variety of local businesses. Celebrate Dearborn Arts on April 26 at the Mayor’s Arts Awards

The Dearborn Community Arts Council and the Dearborn Mayor’s Office are proud to present the 29th Annual Mayor’s Arts Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, April 26 at 7 p.m. in “Studio A” at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center

An afterglow reception to follow in the Padzieski Art Gallery. Admission is free and the public are welcome to come and celebrate with the honorees.

The Mayor’s Arts Awards Selection Committee announces and congratulates these individuals and organizations being honored for their work in the arts in 2016:

These great friends to our community will be honored at the Awards Ceremony, recognizing their outstanding achievements and contributions for 2016. The DCAC looks forward to spotlighting these individuals and groups who have enriched our lives and our communities with their talent, as well as their dedication and support of the arts.

The evening’s celebration features a special performance by the U.S. Air Force’s Freedom Winds Quintet and the MC for the festivities will be Radio Host Jay Korinek, beloved Henry Ford College Professor and recipient of last year’s Arts Educator Award.

Seeking Submissions for 22nd Annual Juried Photography Exhibition

The Dearborn Community Arts Council is proud to present the 22nd annual Juried Photography Exhibition, set for Feb. 1-28 at the Padzieski Gallery.

The gallery is located inside of the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center, 15801 Michigan Ave. in Dearborn.

The exhibition is sponsored by photo and video gear store ProCam of Livonia.

Amateur and professional photographers alike are invited to submit their works for consideration in the show.

ELIGIBILITY AND CONDITIONS:

  • Open to both amateur & professional photographers
  • Jurying will be from actual work (no slides, websites, etc.)
  • Juried work must be dropped off between 12-7 p.m. Jan. 17 and 18
  • The DCAC and the City of Dearborn are responsible for works on city premises, but not for work delivered early, in damaged condition or left after the close of the exhibit.
  • We reserve the right to determine qualifying categories.

JURY AND ENTRY FEE:

  • $20 per entry (first 2), & $10 (entries after first 2)
  • You may submit up to two entries in each category at $20 for the first 2, then $10 per photograph.
  • ENTRY FEES ARE NON-REFUNDABLE

ENTRY PROCEDURES:

  • Artists submitting photographs for this exhibit must complete the entry form and checklist, sign the form, attach a label to the back of each piece and enclose the correct entry fee. Your label must include artist’s name, title, category, price.
  • All prints must be framed under glass or plexiglass and be ready for hanging with attached wire.
  • Size is limited to 36 inches by 36 inches, including frame

Photographers are responsible for delivery and pick up of their work. ALL work must be picked up after the exhibition by March 1, 2017 between 1-6 p.m.

HAND DELIVERY AND PICKUP OF ENTRIES:

You may deliver your framed photos on Jan. 17-18 between 12-7 p.m. No mail-in entries will be accepted. NO WORK will be accepted BEFORE Jan. 17 at 12 p.m. or AFTER 7 p.m. on Jan. 18, 2016.

Deliver entries to the Padzieski Art Gallery inside the Ford Community Performing Arts Center, located at 15801 Michigan Avenue Dearborn MI, 48126.  Call 313-943-3095 with any questions.

PICK UP: All accepted work must be picked up between 1-6 p.m. March 1 AFTER the close of the exhibit. Any accepted or declined work NOT picked up by 6 p.m. March 1 becomes DCAC property.

DECLINED WORK:

Participants will be notified by email if their work is declined.  A return response will be requested. All declined work must be picked up on Wednesday, Jan. 19 between 12-7 p.m.

SALES / GALLERY COMMISSIONS:

A 30 percent commission will be charged on all sales made during the exhibition. Please price work accordingly. All purchases to remain in gallery during exhibition.

OPENING RECEPTION:

The Opening Party & Reception with Awards will be held Wednesday, Feb. 1 2016 from 6-8 p.m. The Reception & Exhibition are free to attend.
